The Who, how I became a fan

How I became a fan of The Who

To be honest, I've was listening to more music in spanish than in english until april month last year because I was just a mexican girl studying veterinary and in fact were my parents the ones who were rock music followers (they were rock musicians in 1980 decade), so that was I growed up listening since children music until The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, etc. (I mean all that rock music stuff, including The Who) but I had no conscience about who were who and in my adolescence I started to listening Pop music in spanish. Of course I listened Progressive Rock and Blues due to my parents in the first case and because my grandpa Enrique in the second one. But then, last year I met the man of my life, a rock musician and rendered fan of The Who.

The first time I listened seriously and carefully to a song by The Who was when my boyfriend started playing on his computer the song 'Heaven and Hell' and I loved it, then 'The Who Plays in Monterey', 'Live at Leeds' and 'The Kids are Alright Soundtrack'. Recently he had attended a concert by The Who at El Palacio de los Deportes here in Mexico City (October 2016). But he is several years older than me and of course he saw The Who twice before still with John Entwistle, my beloved Enty, and he is The Who fan since 1980. In fact he based his guitar playing focused to Jimi Hendrix's and The Who's influenced sound going then to progressive stuff. I loved how he played guitar the first time I saw him playing and I asked him about how he does it and then he told me "I am a The Who fan" laugthing and thinking I didn't know who were The Who. I knew it but not deeply, I only knew they are a band my father likes. Until that day I thought 'Tommy' was a song, not Rock Opera, and I asked him if he could play it, and he started to play 'Pinball Wizard-See Me, feel Me' and really surprised me. I was very surprised listening to him playing that whit his Fender Telecaster (althought he uses Fender Stratocaster the most of the times he plays). He explained me all about The Who, since 'My Generation' until 'Enless Wire'. He told me that the day John passed away, he cried very deeply. My boyfriend loves The Who and he plays guitar (very well¡) and he likes Keith, Roger and Pete but his hero in The Who is John Entwistle (mine too). So eventually I started to buy The Who records and becoming a The Who fan. I was wishing to be into a The Who concert and i moaned because I am as young as 27 and feeling I lost a good moment in music (thinking also in Queen, ELP, Rush, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, etc.). I really started to be a The Who fan, specially a John Entwistle's one.

Short time ago we had a ruptcy and, due that, I accepted a job in Guadalajara City (they offered it me because I am a veterinarian) and I decided to go there. My boyfriend went to search for me and he thought he losed me, here's the romantic part, I was sitted in the arrivals hall, sad, almost to cry, lost in the crowd, and my tablet started to play (from the nothing¡) the song 'Heaven and Hell' and he, that was couple metters near, finally found me and runned to me. We huged and forgive each one and went go back home (yes, I rennounced that job). Thanks that The Who's song incident, very strange to be true, we started again (yes, I'm something corny and I don't care).

Being an spiritual mexican-italian girl, I think John, in some way, made us back. Of course, is my fantasious illusion. Anyway I became a The Who fan and a John's follower.
